Single Parenting Tips

As a single parent, you may have a lot of demands and challenges — balancing the demands of work, your family, and your children, who may have tantrums without a parent at home. Your temper may flare, further complicating things.

Being a single parent may force you, and only you to take care of all of your kid’s needs. Also, you may be concerned that your child doesn’t have a role model, either male or female. Below is a short list of what you need to know to reduce stress when raising kids as a single parent.

Set up a routine

Kids will feel more in control if you establish a routine for them. Ensure that strict bedtime, mealtime, and screen time restrictions are in place. Give your children some time to get used to the new routine. Be consistent and try not to be deterred by their reasons for not following it.

Specify limits

Make sure your child knows the rules and expectations of your household. This includes teaching them to talk and act respectfully. You may also work together with the caregivers to enforce discipline consistently. Consider re-evaluating certain limits, such as your child’s screen time, as a reward and encourage greater responsibility.

Spend time with your children

You can spend quality time with your child anywhere and anytime you like. For instance, you may ask about your kid’s day at dinner instead of watching TV. You can play word games while driving to school, or recite stories at bedtime.

Be interested and ask about your child’s favourite things. You may also ask him or her to teach you his or her favourite board game.

Show your kids how much you love them. Smile, laugh and hug your child as often as you can. Show your kids that you’re excited and happy to have them around.

Acknowledge and praise their involvement and ask help from them. Doing so makes them feel needful and builds bonds.

Once in a while surprise your kids with things like toys, ice-cream, cookies, zip coveralls, basketball, etc… It is crucial for your kids to know how much you love and care for them.
